The Premack Principle

When training your dog, remember that a reward can be many things to a dog — not just food! This is the Premack Principle in action: you can reinforce (or reward) your dog for doing something he is less likely to do with a behavior he does alot. In other words, if you can count on your dog to chase a squirrel (something he does alot), then reward him for waiting patiently by your side with … a well-earned squirrel chase!
