Feisty Fido Classes

Is taking a simple walk in the neighborhood with your dog a nerve-wracking experience?  Does your dog bark, growl, or lunge when on leash and in the presence of other dogs?  You are NOT alone!

Believe it or not, dogs like this are often extremely fearful and insecure, and all the bluster and aggression is the best way they know to keep themselves safe.   Dogs like this need help to learn how to function appropriately with a dog nearby.  And once they learn it, they need lots of   practice being successful.   That is the beauty of a group class — lots of practice and lots of success!

FEISTY FIDO 101:  The goal of this class is to teach you the proper handling skills and  techniques to help your dog relax in the presence of other dogs, to offer you his trust and attention, to remain in his “thinking brain” and to make good choices in close proximity to other dogs, to shrink the “personal bubble” in which he feels safe, and to practice polite dog body language.  We will practice passing by dogs in a relaxed mode from a comfortable distance but at this point, all encounters are controlled and distance is carefully managed.  We have laid a strong foundation, but everything takes place indoors and the dog is not yet ready for real-world encounters.

**All dogs will be desensitized to wearing a Gentle Leader, Snoot Loop or Halti due to the nature of the course.  I will show you how to do this in a way that is pleasant and easy for your dog.  In addition, each dog is an individual and may require a muzzle.  If so, we will discuss muzzle choices that allow for your dog’s comfort, so he can pant, drink, and eat delicious treats — which is important to his training success!

ADDITIONAL FEISTY FIDO OFFERINGS (scheduled upon demand):

FEISTY FIDO 201:  (For graduates of Feisty Fido 101 only)    The goal of this class is a dog who can reliably manage real-life encounters with another dog or dogs.  Feisty 201 takes place primarily outdoors, and teaches how to manage dogs passing by from all directions very close to him, how to handle surprises, how to walk in a group with other dogs, how to pass on tight sidewalks, how to manage polite approaches and recall, as well as how to deal with approaches by multiple dogs.       TUITION:  $225

FEISTY FIDO DROP-IN’S: (for graduates of FF101, or Feisty Fido TimeSaver, or 3 private Behavior Modification sessions and instructor approval) —  The goal of this class is an opportunity for you and your dog to practice your new skills with new dogs in an indoor, structured setting.  WE LOVE DROP-IN’s because it gives both your dog and the other dogs in class more practice with strangers.

If you’d like to drop in on one of our currently scheduled Feisty Fido classes listed above, just email me!  I’ll make sure it’s an appropriate class and the fit among dogs will be good.       TUITION:  $35/class

FEISTY HIKES!:(for graduates of FF101, or Feisty Fido TimeSaver, or 3 private Behavior Modification sessions and instructor approval)

Come hike with some friends!  Lots of people are dealing with dogs who have a bit of reactivity.  You’ve got the skills, so let’s go practice in the great outdoors! Feisty Hikes is an opportunity for you and your dog to use what you’ve learned as you encounter real obstacles on the trail.  You will receive helpful instruction as you and your dog pass strange dogs and unfamiliar people.  We’ll also brush up on leashwork and recalls that may have become rusty over time.

Dogs LOVE traveling in a group.  Moving and sniffing are primal activities for them, and a social avenue that  even reactive dogs can enjoy!

                                                                     TUITION:  $25/hike
